What it is
Implants come in different shapes, profiles and volumes, and can be placed above or below the chest muscle. The choice is made together, based on your anatomy, skin quality and the result you are looking for, not on a volume number alone.
Who it may suit
Adult women who feel their breasts are small, who have asymmetry or who have lost volume after pregnancy or breastfeeding. If there is significant sagging, a breast lift (mastopexy) may also be needed, which we assess in consultation.
How it is done
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The incision can be placed in the fold under the breast, around the areola or in the armpit; in consultation we explain the advantages and limitations of each approach and of the proposed implant.
Recovery and aftercare
- A support bra is worn for a few weeks.
- Arm effort is resumed gradually.
- Implants do not last for ever and may need replacing; we recommend regular follow-up.
Risks and limitations
Risks include capsular contracture, implant rupture, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry and infection. We also discuss BIA-ALCL, a rare type of lymphoma associated mainly with textured implants. All of this information is given in writing before you decide.
